The pilot and co-pilot of a US military aircraft were killed when it crashed in a

forest in eastern France this afternoon.

The A-10 jet hit the ground near Domptail in the Vosges department near the German border and burst into flames. It was carrying munitions.

There were no other casualties.

It was not immediately known why the aircraft was flying over the Lorraine region or what caused the crash. American consular officials have been alerted, French authorities said.
