York - British detectives have alerted docks and airports in an attempt to stop a £1 million haul of art works stolen in a terrifying armed raid leaving the country.

A total of 20 paintings, including a Turner watercolour, were taken after two masked thieves armed with a pistol and sawn-off shotgun tied up staff at York City Art Gallery, in York, as they prepared to close on Friday evening.
