Ankara - Turkey urged the EU yesterday to officially declare it a candidate for membership at the union's upcoming summit in Helsinki and pledged to fulfil the political and economic criteria required for ultimate membership.

President Suleyman Demirel and the State Minister, Mr Mehmet Ali Irtemcelik, stressed that Turkey expected equal treatment alongside the other candidates at a Euro-Med summit of economic and social councils in the Mediterranean port city of Antalya.
