Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble was treated for possible anthrax exposure after a building he visited in the US was found to be contaminated, it was revealed today.

He took medical precautions after being contacted by the US authorities last week to be told anthrax had been found at a building in Washington where he met a congressman, a party spokesman said.

Two weeks ago Mr Trimble had discussions with Congressman Mike Pence at his office on Capitol Hill during a series of meetings with leading politicians and members of the Bush administration.

Mr Trimble's party colleague, Stormont culture minister Michael McGimpsey and the UUP's North American representative Anne Smith, also took medication as a precaution, said the party spokesman.
