Gardai in north Galway are continuing to monitor a tense situation between rival factions of the same Traveller family in Tuam.

Two people were taken to hospital after serious clashes last Saturday night. One of the injured is detained in Galway University Hospital.

Four others were hospitalised on Tuesday night after further scuffles broke out at 2 a.m. Gardai seized a number of slash hooks; while no arrests have been made, their investigations into the incidents are continuing.

It is understood that most of those involved are local Travellers. Since the weekend Garda patrol cars have been positioned at either end of Gilmartin Road.

Last night a Garda spokesman described the situation in the town as still tense.
