Tobacco and spirits seized

Cigarettes, spirits and tobacco worth an estimated £1

Cigarettes, spirits and tobacco worth an estimated £1.5 million were seized yesterday by customs officers in Co Kilkenny, writes Chris Dooley.

About 6,000 bottles of whiskey, 1.5 million cigarettes and 16 kilograms of roll-your-own tobacco were discovered in a container at Belview port, near Waterford city.

The container, which was presented as fruit and vegetables, had arrived from Belgium and was to be delivered to a customer in Northern Ireland. No arrests were made as the goods were in transit.
