PERENNIAL lobelias are hardy and can survive average winter conditions outdoors. However, some of the more choice hybirds can suffer from excessive damp and alternating spells of frost and rain. Some gardeners move the plants into a greenhouse for the winter but equally effective protection can be given by providing some shelter from rain. Old windows or large sheets of glass raised on a few bricks to allow air circulation will do the job nicely. The glass may need some bricks or a weight to hold it in place and prevent it blowing away in stormy weather.
There is still time to introduce some winter colour near the house in beds or in containers. Winter flowering pansies will bloom for months on end and there are wallflowers available which will brighten early spring and bring a rich scent which will be most welcome.
