An appeal is being taken against a High Court order permitting cigarette companies to inspect and copy the records of smokers suing them for damages, the Supreme Court was told yesterday. Three smokers have applied to the Supreme Court for a stay on the High Court order pending their appeal.

The application was adjourned for three weeks. Undertakings were given that, in the meantime, the companies would not attempt to move on foot of the High Court order.
