Six men are in custody in Limerick after being arrested in the city today. The six, three of whom are believed to be from Dublin, were arrested while meeting in a city hotel and it is understood the men are being questioned about alleged continuity IRA membership.
The men were detained during a meeting at the Glentworth hotel hotel in Limerick City.
They were taken to Henry Street and Mayorstone garda stations in Limerick where they were being held for questioning.
A garda spokeswoman confirmed the six were being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
The men were arrested in the city just after mid-day and four were taken to Henry Street Garda station and the other two to Mayorstone station.
The men can be held for 72 hours before they are charged, released or have their periods of detention extended.
The Continuity IRA announced its arrival in July 1996 when it detonated a 1,200lb car bomb, destroying a hotel near Enniskillen, Northern Ireland.
The group remains strongly opposed to the current peace process which developed from the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
Its operations have been hampered in recent years after a series of arrests by gardai.
