A protest against Shell's construction of the Corrib gas terminal in Co. Mayo has been called off by the organisers, who cited the "unacceptable level of aggression and force" used by gardaí during their last major protest.
The Shell to Sea group's Day of Solidarity was due to take place next Friday.
In a statement, the group said it was calling the protest off "solely in order to protect the health and safety of participants".
There were major disturbances during a protest at the construction site at Bellanaboy, Co Mayo on November 10th. Gardaí used batons to disperse protesters and eight people were injured, including four gardaí.
"Serious disruption was caused by Garda roadblocks to local people traveling to work and school," Shell To Sea said today.
"Subsequently, Gardaí employed an unacceptable level of aggression and force against people engaged in peaceful protest and minor civil disobedience. In these actions a number of people received serious injuries."
The group also said it planned to redouble its campaign in the coming weeks.
Shell to Sea has called for an independent Commission of Enquiry to be established to examine the best location for Shell's terminal. This proposal has been rejected by Minister for the Marine Noel Dempsey and Shell.
Speaking last week, Mr Dempsey said a fellow TD had overheard a mobile phone conversation which suggested that a riot had been planned in advanced of the last protest.
