A dispute between the former principal and the board of management at the Kilkenny School Project National School was resolved at an employment appeals tribunal yesterday.

The former principal, Mr Joe McKeown, was claiming that he had been constructively dismissed from his post.

When the hearing opened Mr Frank Clarke SC, for the board of management, asked for a short adjournment for negotiation on the issues involved. When the tribunal resumed Mr Clarke said the issues had been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.

Mr McKeown's solicitor, Ms Carol Fawsitt, said terms had been agreed which were confidential to the parties.

Afterwards Mr McKeown said he was pleased with the terms of the settlement, but could make no further comment. A board spokesman, Mr Tommy Roche, said they were "thrilled" with the outcome and were happy that the "whole saga is now finished".

However, a group calling themselves Concerned Parents said they were not happy that the terms of the settlement were confidential, and demanded to be fully informed.

"This dispute has broken our hearts," said Mr Ian Coulter, one of the four founding members of the group. "This was not just a good school, it was a unique school."

"We now look forward to a period of reconciliation between those who run the school and the parents," he went on, adding that it was necessary to rebuild the school's image so it would have the trust of potential applicants for teaching jobs.
