Mexico City - The former Mexican president, Mr Carlos Salinas, his wife and small child, have set up home in Havana where a team of Mexican lawyers are due to arrive this morning to brief him on the appeal procedure against the 50-year prison sentence handed down to his brother, Raul, late last week.

Mr Salinas has dedicated most of the past four years to the defence of his brother, charged with masterminding the killing of a political rival and former brother-in-law, Mr Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, in September 1994.

The guilty sentence was a severe setback to the Salinas family, while analysts described it as "a definitive blow" to Mr Salinas's repeated efforts to return to Mexico.
