London - The British Defence Secretary, Mr George Robertson, has been made a peer with the title of Lord Robertson of Port Ellen. His elevation to the House of Lords, ahead of taking up his new post of NATO Secretary-General, means that a byelection in his Hamilton South constituency will be held on September 23th.
Mr Robertson (53) will remain as Defence Secretary for the time being with party officials refusing to speculate about a future cabinet shuffle.
