Mourners at the funeral Mass for a young mother of three murdered last week were yesterday urged to reach out and help other women in danger as a real and lasting tribute to her memory.

Fr Gerard Galvin, at the funeral Mass of Rose Patterson in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Clonakilty, said her violent and sudden death had stunned the local community and "left behind in its wake a terrible and deep sadness".

"What can we do?" asked Fr Galvin.

"We can ask ourselves - are there other women in our community who are in danger and what can we do to help?

"What can we do to reach out to them so that they will be able to find the help that they need? We cannot do that for Rose now but perhaps we can do it for someone else and if we can, then I think that would be a real, lasting tribute to Rose," Fr Galvin told the mourners.
