A priest in his 40s appeared in court yesterday charged with nine counts of indecently assaulting two boys in the late 1980s.

All the offences are alleged to have occurred in west Cork during an eight-month period between November 1988 and June 1989.

The priest, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victims, pleaded guilty to seven of the charges but is denying the remaining two.

Yesterday at Bandon District Court, Judge Brendan Wallace ordered that the accused be sent forward for sentence on those charges and for trial on the other two counts to Cork Circuit Criminal Court on October 27th. The man was remanded on his own bail of £5,000.
