Poll says British voters want to keep pound

The vast majority of Britons are against scrapping the pound and joining the euro, a BBC survey released today says.

Almost a third of respondents said Britain should quit the European Union altogether.

The survey says seven out of 10 voters want to keep the pound. This is said to suggest anti-euro feeling in Britain is hardening.

The British government is committed in principle to joining the euro group but only if a series of economic tests are met and voters support the switch in a referendum.

The survey found just one in five voters believes Britain should sign up to the euro - down three percentage points on last year.
