A man has been arrested on suspicion of a triple murder in an east London tower block.

He was arrested in hospital where he is still being treated for stab injuries he sustained himself.

Four-year-old Fahmeda Khatun; her mother, Ms Nurjhan Khatun (31); and uncle Mr Kamal Uddin (35) died following a stabbing attack at the flat in Bethnal Green, east London, which neighbours described as a "bloodbath".

The arrested man is believed to be Ms Khatun's estranged husband. He is not Fahmeda's natural father.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition following the stabbings last Thursday. He has now regained consciousness and was arrested by police at 9.40 a.m. today. He is described as being in a "serious but stable" condition.

Police are still trying to find out how his injuries were inflicted.

The two adults were found dead in the flat and the young girl was taken, suffering from serious injuries, to hospital where she died later. The estranged husband was found collapsed on the landing.

A knife was found at the scene and sent for forensic examination.
