A man died following an incident outside a shop on a busy Dublin city centre street on Friday.

An Garda Síochána said officers were alerted shortly after 5pm when security personnel detained a man, aged in his 30s, on Henry Street in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident.

The man became unresponsive at the scene and was taken by ambulance to the Mater hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Another man (80s) was injured as the suspect attempted to flee, the force said. He was taken to the Mater hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The scene was forensically examined and the coroner notified, with the Office of the State Pathologist due to conduct a postmortem.

In a statement, Henry Street-based retailer Arnotts said: “An incident occurred outside our store on Henry Street on Friday. Emergency services and An Garda Síochána attended the scene, and the matter is now part of an active Garda investigation. As inquiries are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, received a referral from An Garda Síochána on Friday, and a team of its investigators attended the scene. The Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024, provides for the referral to Fiosrú of any matter concerning death of, or serious harm to, a person who has interacted with gardaí.

The Garda appealed to witnesses, or anyone with relevant video from the Henry Street area between 5pm and 5.30pm on Friday, to contact Store Street Garda station (01 6668000), the Garda Confidential Line (1800 666111) or any garda station.
