An Omagh public representative has delivered an "irresistible" demand from his town to the two sides in the decommissioning dispute to resolve their differences.

Mr Pat MacDonnell, an SDLP member of Omagh District Council, said: "Decommissioning must be sorted out. Omagh demands it. Ireland demands it."

Speaking in Dublin, Mr MacDonnell talked of expectations that the attack, which killed 29 people, would be the North's final atrocity.

"The bombers who came to Omagh on the Feast of the Assumption came with one aim in mind: to destroy the peace process. They have failed miserably. That atrocity has generated an anger and determination that I believe is irresistible."

Mr MacDonnell told a reception at the Mansion House for survivors of the Omagh bombing, hosted by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Senator Joe Doyle, that no political party had a right to place a barrier to the progress of the Irish nation.

The North Inner City Business Association, which organised the Dublin event, plans to repeat the exercise on a larger scale in the new year.

Among the participants was Ms Nicola Emery (21), who was caught in the explosion and gave birth to a baby girl, Chloe Hope Valerie, five days later.
