A Palestinian teenager was killed and his grandfather critically wounded this afternoon after Israeli troops opened fire on a crowd of youths throwing stones at them in the West Bank city of Nablus.

Ahmed Abu Zahra, 17, was shot in the head and chest during the riots in the Casbah, where Israeli troops launched a major search operation for militants the day before.

His grandfather, aged 55, was also in critical condition after a bullet hit him in the face, the medics said.

One other person was wounded in the clashes.

The teenager's death took to 2,977 the number of fatalities since the start of the Palestinian uprising in September 2000, including 2,227 Palestinians and 694 Israelis.
