A mothers group is to complain to the Taoiseach about a series of school activity books which portrays the elderly as people who "spit, dress badly, spend their pensions on brandy and 'gobble' samples in supermarkets".

The National Union of Mothers of Ireland is seeking the withdrawal of the Magic Emerald activity book series. A spokeswoman for the Department of Education said individual textbooks were a matter for school boards.
