Paris - France's National Assembly and Senate meet in a rare joint session today to approve a constitutional amendment allowing Paris to cede some sovereignty to the EU by ratifying the Amsterdam Treaty.

The vote, held in the former royal palace in Versailles that symbolises the past glory of the nation, comes as France resumes a long-standing debate between its pro-European majority and a hard core of Eurosceptics.
