Detectives in Northern Ireland are questioning a man about a series of paramilitary punishment shootings in Belfast.

Detectives in Northern Ireland are questioning a man about a series of paramilitary punishment shootings in Belfast.

Officers arrested the suspect under special anti-terrorism legislation during searches of eight houses in the east of the city.

It is understood that gun pouches and flares were also seized during the raid. A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman confirmed: "The planned house searches in east Belfast were in connection with paramilitary-style assaults.

"In one house a number of items were recovered and one man was arrested."
