A man has been charged with murdering his elderly father who was found dead following a stabbing and a fire at his retirement home in Dublin in January.
Edward Boylan (74) was attacked and stabbed in sheltered accommodation for senior citizens, at Ravensdale Close, Kimmage, Dublin 12.
His body was discovered in his bed on the afternoon of January 7th when emergency services were alerted to a fire at the council owned property.
His son Edward Boylan (29), who is no fixed abode but originally from Leighlin Road, Crumlin, in Dublin, had been questioned in January after the discovery of his father’s body and was released as gardai prepared a file for the DPP.
He was brought before Dublin District Court this morning charged with murdering his father between January 6th and January 7th, 2012, at Ravensdale Close.
Det Sgt Barry Butler told Judge John O’Neill that he arrested Mr Boylan jnr at the North Circular Road, in Dublin yesterday afternoon. He was taken to Crumlin Garda station where he was charged with murder. The court heard he replied: “I’m better off not saying anything.”
Mr Boylan jnr, who was wearing navy jeans, black boots, a white T-shirt and a black jacket, has not yet indicated how he intends to plead to the charge and remained silent during brief hearing.
Defence solicitor Adrian Lennon asked for legal aid to be granted to his client.
Judge O’Neill granted legal aid and remanded him in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on March 14th. The judge also agreed to a request from the defence solicitor to make an additional order to “recommend medical attention as appropriate”.
