A jury at the Central Criminal Court has convicted a 63-year- old west Dublin man on 28 counts of raping the daughter of a family friend over a number of years.

John Geraghty, Old Nangor Road, Clondalkin, was remanded in custody for sentence on November 14th by Mr Justice White who directed Geraghty's name be added to the register of sex offenders.

The now 22-year-old victim and members of her family confirmed after Geraghty had been found guilty that they wanted him named in the media.

The jury of four women and eight men took just under nine hours to reach a 10-2 majority guilty verdicts on the rape charges. It was day four of the trial and the jury had spent Friday night in a hotel.

Geraghty was also convicted by 10-2 majority verdicts on one charge of indecent assault against the same woman and on two further charges of sexual assault against another victim.

The offences happened between 1989 and 1997.

The jury disagreed on one charge of rape against the 22- year-old woman and on one charge of sexual assault involving another woman and found Geraghty not guilty on four further sexual assault charges.

He had denied all the 37 charges involving four women.

Mr Justice White thanked the jury for the care and attention it gave to the case and said the members had "clearly dealt with the issues in a very conscientious manner".

He exempted the members from further service for five years unless they wished to serve on a jury if called.

Mr Justice White directed the preparation of victim impact and other necessary reports for the sentence hearing and invited members of the jury to attend then if they wished.

The rape victim told the jury that Geraghty began raping her in her home when she was eight years old and he was baby-sitting for her parents. She said the rapes continued later in his home.
