Dublin 0-12 Tyrone 0-7
Manager Tommy Lyons steered Dublin to a five point victory over Tyrone in the under-21 All-Ireland football final at Pairc Tailteann in Navan today.
The victory is Dublin's first in the 39-year history of the competition and prevented Tyrone from winning their third title in four years.
Lyons, in particular, will relish the victory having seen his senior side exit the championship somewhat prematurely in July, when they suffered a four point defeat to beaten All-Ireland finalists Armagh in the third round of the qualifying series.
The Leinster side started brightly with early scores from Conal Keaney and Declan Lally edging them ahead. However, Tyrone swiftly bridged that gap with Aidan McCarron and Leo Meenan finding their range to level.
A 10 minute spell then ensued where both defences worked hard to prevent further scores. But Dublin, constantly harrying and pressuring their opponents, pushed ahead with three successive scores from Graham Cullen, Alan Brogan and John Noonan.
Tyrone, though, remained confident and strung together a series of neat attacks. One such move should have been rewarded with a goal on 26 minutes only for Dublin goalkeeper Paul Copeland to deny Aidan McCarron with a superb save.
Dublin led by 0-6 to 0-3 at half-time and maintained their first-half form in the early stages of the second period with Brogan and Noonan edging Lyons' side four ahead with 20 minutes to play.
Tyrone rallied with further scores from Joe McMahon and McCarron but with the game drawing to a close it was a goal, rather than points, that the Ulster side required.
However, Dublin's ability to scrap hard and break down ball paid dividends as it was they who controlled the closing stages, frustrating Tyrone in the process by starving them of much needed possession.
Dublin midfielder Declan O'Mahony, a star performer for the duration, smacked over a late free from the right to confirm the victory and send the trophy to the capital for the first time.
