THE longest serving member of the Dail, Mr Seamus Pattison (Labour, Carlow Kilkenny), was appointed Ceann Comhairle by agreement.
He was proposed for the post by the leader of the Labour Party Mr Dick Spring, who said Mr Pattison had been a distinguished member of the House since 1961. His father, James, had served before him. Mr Pattison was a very experienced politician who was a member of Kilkenny County Council and had been mayor of Kilkenny on three occasions.
His illustrious career in the Dail made him a highly suitable candidate for the position of Ceann Comhairle. He was a most fair minded person and he would ensure that everybody's rights were protected in the House.
The deputy leader of Fianna Fail, Ms Mary O'Rourke, seconded the motion. She also paid tribute to Mr Pattison and his lengthy service. To have held his seat for 36 years was a great achievement in itself. The trust of the people in him and his longstanding experience would stand him in good stead in the chair.
There were no other nominations and Mr Pattison was deemed elected.
Replying, Mr Pattison said he wanted to express his profound gratitude for the confidence placed in him. "I assure you all I will strive earnestly to prove worthy of this great honour now conferred on me."
His aim would be to carry out the work of the chair in such a manner as to give full expression to all members consistent with standing orders and the due business of the House before them.
He paid tribute to his predecessor, Mr Sean Treacy, who would be fondly remembered by all for the invaluable contribution he made in upholding the dignity and the decorum of the House.
