Limerick celebrated yesterday as the city's Park Canal restoration project was awarded €1 million in EU funding.
The Lord Mayor, Mr Dick Sadlier, said: "Limerick City Council is delighted that this important project will now go ahead, which is an important milestone in achieving the Riverside City vision for Limerick." He also thanked project partners, Shannon Development.
Mr Liam McElligott, chairman of Shannon Development, said: "The Park Canal restoration is a major part of the overall Limerick Riverside City project, which sets out a vision for a new zone of development in Limerick city and its hinterland, based around the river and canal.
"The new development zone runs from the location of the proposed new crossing of the Shannon below Limerick city, through the city centre, passing the medieval city, and linking to the University of Limerick via the Park Canal."
Mr Pat Cox who represents Munster as an MEP president of the European Parliament, said: "The Park Canal restoration project will be part of a wider EU project involving Limerick and five other European cities."
In early 2003, Limerick City Council and Shannon Development made a joint submission for the EU's INTERREG funding for Limerick under the theme "Water in Historic City Centres".
