Jakarta - Indonesia said yesterday it expected to soon name a military officer as an official suspect in its probe into the bloodshed that swept East Timor last year and which has already forced a top general from cabinet.

The UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, visiting Indonesia, praised the investigation and pressed the government to ensure those responsible for the violence were brought to justice.

Under mounting pressure from home and abroad, Mr Wahid on Monday suspended the former armed forces chief Gen. Wiranto from the cabinet pending an investigation by the Attorney General, Mr Marzuki Darusman.
