Irishman injured in Bangkok fall to be flown home

An Irishman who has been in a coma since an accident in Thailand four weeks ago will be flown home tomorrow, his mother has said.

Scaffolder Robbie Robinson (32) suffered critical injuries after falling four stories from a building in Bangkok while visiting friends.

Speaking on RTÉ radio this morning Mr Robinson’s mother Martina said her son would be flown home tomorrow.

“We’re expecting to be back home in Dublin by 8pm tomorrow night,” Ms Robinson, who has been at her son’s bedside for the past four weeks, said.

Mr Robinson’s family have been told to expect the worst by doctors in Bangkok but his mother hopes he might recover if he receives treatment at home. It will cost the family about €100,000 to fly him home and fundraising efforts have been ongoing to raise the money.

“I just want to say thanks to everybody who has done so much,” Ms Robinson said.

Mr Robinson had stopped in Thailand en route to Christchurch in New Zealand, where he lives, after spending time in Ireland. He accidentally left his keys in his apartment and lost his footing while attempting to climb up a fire escape to retrieve them.
