A woman in her late 40s was killed in a car crash in the midlands this afternoon, gardaí said.

The victim was travelling on the Ballycumber Road, near Ferbane, Co Offaly, when the incident occurred at about 4pm.

It is believed she lost control of her car before it left the road. She was the sole occupant of the car and no other vehicle was involved.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her body has been removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

Gardaí in Banagher are investigating. They have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The road was closed for an examination by forensic investigators.
