What’s on: something for the weekend

Festival of Youth Orchestras, RBS 6 Nations Championship, Other Voices and the Galway International Rally

Festival of Youth Orchestras 2014

Billed as a must-see event for all the family, the 19th Festival of Youth Orchestras will see more than 500 young players from around Ireland perform at the National Concert Hall on Saturday. There will be two performances, one at 3pm and the second at 8pm. Musicians will perform original works and arrangements from Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet, Bartok, Scott Joplin's 'The Entertainer', Corelli's 'Christmas Concerto' and arrangements of Elbow, Cole Porter and more.

RBS 6 Nations Championship

Ireland captain Paul O'Connell is set to return to the starting 15 for Saturday's eagerly anticipated Six Nations match against Wales at the Aviva Stadium. O'Connell's recovery from last week's late-developing chest infection sees him slot in for Dan Tuohy who drops to the bench. Stalwart centre Gordon D'Arcy replaces Luke Marshall while Cian Healy has made a full recovery from the ankle knock suffered against Scotland. Kick off at the Aviva is at 2.30pm.

Other Voices Derry 2014

One of Ireland's most unique music events, the annual Other Voices gathering, which started in Dingle in 2002, is in Derry this weekend. It brings with it an array of artists from across the musical spectrum. Expect performances from BellX1, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, The Gloaming, Little Matador and The Amazing Snakeheads. Another weekend highlight will see master fiddler and co-founder of The Gloaming Martin Hayes in conversation Jim Carroll as part of his Banter Salon series at the city's Nerve Centre venue. This will be followed by a screening of Moment to Moment, a documentary about the exceptional band. Seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Galway International Rally 2014

Petrolheads from around the country and further afield gather in Galway this weekend for the Galway International Rally 2014. Recent bad weather and severe flooding in the Gort area prompted a change to scheduled events and both stages of the rally due to be run on Saturday have now been shortened. However, stage 2, which was to have run twice, will now run three times as part of a revised time schedule for the day. Details of the amended route are available on the event website.
