Westport hotel worker was ‘highly liked’, mourners at funeral hear

The funeral of a Polish woman who was found dead in an apartment in Westport, Co Mayo last month has heard she "loved to laugh" and was "highly liked".

The remains of Sylwia Adamczyk (40) were discovered at the property on Castlebar Street on July 31st.

Her funeral took place at St Mary’s Church in Westport on Wednesday morning.

Fr Shane Costello, who led the service, said a tragic death "is like a power outage".

“One minute the light is shining, next thing it’s not and in an instant our world is turned upside down. Nothing can prepare us for something like this,” he said.

Fr Costello said the darkness that has unfolded in the community over the past number of weeks is “tough and not easy to bear”.

He said Ms Adamczyk "died before her time" and will be missed by family, friends and work colleagues from Knockranny House Hotel in Westport. He said she had been living in the town for the last five years.

Ms Adamczyk’s friend Anita said she was “a person you couldn’t get bored with”.

“We loved meeting up and going on walks together. Sylwia loved to laugh, she was a happy person, always very friendly to everyone she would ever meet. She was highly liked at work and outside of work, anywhere she went,” she told the congregation.

Two men aged in their 50s and 30s were arrested in connection with the death of Ms Adamczyk last weekend but were subsequently released without charge.
