Two men die in 5am road crash in Co Mayo

Two men have been killed in a road crash in Co Mayo.

The first road deaths of the new year happened at about 5am.

It is understood the men, aged 42 and 47, were travelling alone in separate cars and in opposite directions at the time of the crash, on the N26, the main Foxford and Ballina road at Ballynahaglish. Both drivers were pronounced dead at scene.

The deceased were removed to the mortuary at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, where postmortems will take place.

The N26 between Ballina and Swinford will be closed for most of the day as forensic crash investigators examine the vehicles and scene. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Ballina Garda station on 096-20560, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Motorists have been warned to take extra care as heavy rain spreads across the country, with some showers turning to sleet.

Met Éireann said strong onshore winds gusting to gale force will also affect Munster, Leinster and east Ulster coastal areas for a time today with a risk of local spot flooding.

Gardaí in Dundalk are advising that driving conditions are treacherous due to black ice in many areas.
