Tributes paid to Kilkenny crash victim who died on Friday morning

Local GAA club Emeralds extended ‘heartfelt condolences’ to bereft family at difficult time

Tributes have been paid to a 20-year-old man from Co Kilkenny who died in a single-vehicle crash on Friday morning.

The incident occurred at Tobernapaiste, Freshford in Co Kilkenny shortly before 3am, on the R693.

The man named locally as Martin Burke of Chapelfield, Urlingford, was fatally injured. His body was was transferred from the scene to to St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny, where a postmortem took place.

Local GAA club Emeralds extended their “heartfelt condolences” to Mr Burke’s s parents, Deborah and Michael, his sister Emma, and all his relatives from the Burke, Ryan and Moriarty families who have been “deeply connected” with the club over many years.

Mr Burke was a “dedicated player” with the Emeralds and a key member on all teams up to under-19.

“As a mark of respect to the family all club activities, training, matches, wallball opening and Bingo will be cancelled this weekend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a Anam.”

Loughrea Hurling Club also extended their condolences.

Mr Burke will repose at his home on Sunday from 4pm to 7pm.

Removal will follow on Monday morning to the Church of the Assumption Urlingford, arriving for Requiem Mass at 11am. Burial will follow in Johnstown Cemetery.

The family of the deceased thanked locals for their “overwhelming support and understanding at such a difficult time”.

Meanwhile, gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. Road users who may have dash-cam footage and were travelling on the route between 2.45am and 3am on Friday are asked to make this footage available.
