Strong winds batter Atlantic coast as weather warning issued by Met Éireann

Strong winds have begun to batter the west coast and other southern parts of the country on Thursday morning, as a Met Éireann weather warning comes into effect.

Winds are to reach average speeds of between 40 to 50 km/h over the morning and into the afternoon along the Atlantic coast, with gusts hitting up to 90 km/h.

The status yellow weather warning in place for counties Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo came into effect at 6am, and remains until 3pm.

The national forecaster has said winds will be strongest along the coast, as well as exposed areas and higher terrain.

A status yellow warning is also in place for Co Kerry, between 8am and 11am, bringing the same strong winds and rough seas.

A similar yellow warning is in effect in Co Cork from 9am until 1pm, with strong gusts of wind also expected to reach as high as 90 km/h.

The Irish Coast Guard has warned people to stay away from cliffs, exposed beaches, harbours and piers along the Atlantic coast, due to the strong winds and rough seas expected.

Met Éireann has said Thursday will see outbreaks of rain move eastwards across the country over the morning, which will be followed by a mix of sunny spells and scattered rain showers.

The fierce winds will ease off later in the day, but remain stronger near west and northwest coasts. Highest temperatures will be between 16 and 19 degrees.

There will be moderate winds on Thursday night, with scattered rain showers in the west and the north, while the rest of the country will be clear.

Friday is set to be a blustery day, with strong westerly winds in the morning, easing off as the day goes on. Temperatures will reach 20 degrees in some parts, with an overall mix of sunny spells and rain over the day.

Met Éireann has said heavy rain on Saturday is likely to lead to some spot flooding in parts, with a greater risk in the southwest of the country. Saturday night and Sunday will see further rain, broken up by some dry periods.
