Snow and ice warning issued with the return of more wintry weather

Met Éireann and Met Office forecast cold snap for northern counties

A snow and ice warning has been issued for northern counties as the recent mild spell comes to an abrupt end.

Met Éireann issued the yellow warning for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo between 3am and 10am on Friday. A similar warning is in place for Northern Ireland for the same time.

Temperatures will drop nationwide from between 10 and 12 degrees to four to eight degrees, but it will feel especially cold in the north-west with temperatures overnight falling to below zero.

Snow and sleet showers can be expected overnight potentially making road conditions hazardous.

The cold spell will continue on Friday with northern parts of Ireland getting hail and sleet for a time. Snow showers are expected on higher ground across the province of Ulster.

The weekend and early into next week will see a return to milder weather.
