Parts of south Dublin flooded after heavy bursts of rain

Status yellow thunderstorm alert in place for all of Leinster and several other counties

Parts of south Dublin have been left “impassable” due to flooding after bursts of heavy rain on Saturday.

Dundrum Town shopping centre was partly flooded on its ground floor in addition to the outside area and a traffic alert was issued by gardaí for Roebuck Road in Dublin 14.

“Roebuck Road, Dublin 14, has been made impassable due to severe flooding in the area,” said gardaí.

“Please take caution if you are driving in this area. Local diversions are in place,” they added.

Dundrum Town shopping centre said it was experiencing "isolated flooding in the Pembroke District and Level 1 Mall areas due to the sudden heavy downpour. Our teams are working hard to manage this."

Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo and all of Leinster are under a status yellow thunderstorm warning until 8pm this evening.

The warning was issued this morning and came into effect at noon.

"Scattered heavy showers with thunderstorms will cause localised and surface flooding, mainly over Ulster, north Connacht and north and east Leinster," noted Met Éireann's forecast.

Sunny spells are expected to occur also in light to moderate mainly westerly winds. Showers will become more isolated later in the evening.

Saturday night will be largely dry with just isolated showers. But cloud will gather from the west later, with patchy light rain and drizzle developing in the southwest by morning. Mist will thicken to fog in places too.

Sunday will be dry in most areas, with sunny spells developing, the best in the east and northeast.

In Northern Ireland, a yellow rain warning is in place for all six counties from noon until the end of the day.

The United Kingdom met office said “heavy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms may cause some flooding and transport disruption.”

Met Éireann also issued a blight advisory bulletin for Ireland earlier this week and that remains in effect.
