A 15-year-old boy from Co Meath who died on holiday in Lanzarote has been named locally as Mikey Leddy.

He was fatally injured after falling from a wall just before 4am on Monday at the seafront of Puerto del Carmen.

According to local reports he hit his head on the ground after he tried jumping to grab hold of a lamp post but fell from a height of about four metres.

Paramedics who responded took him to the Doctor José Molina Orosa hospital in the island capital Arrecife.

Friends paid tribute to the teenager on social media in the aftermath of his death.

In Navan, Fianna Fáil councillor Tommy Reilly said the boy was a popular young man with a large circle of friends. He played football with the O'Mahony's GAA Club.

“It’s a terrible tragedy to happen to a well-known Navan family . . . two families, relatives and friends are heartbroken tonight.”

One friend posted on Facebook: "RIP a cara Mikey Leddy may God take care of you now and give your family the strength to get through this."

Puerto del Carmen, a popular destination for Irish holidaymakers, is situated on Lanzarote’s east coast.
