Icy conditions reported on roads as weather warning lifted

Icy conditions have been reported on roads in some parts of the midlands on Monday morning following widespread snowfall on Sunday.

Many motorists were stranded on Sunday following a series of snowstorms which affected much of the country. Temperatures dropped to below zero.

A status yellow snow-ice warning was in place for the whole country until 8am on Monday.

Gardaí are reporting slippy conditions across the midlands .

Caution is advised on the M7 northbound between Newbridge and Naas, where it is icy. It may also be slippery on parts of the M9.

Particularly bad conditions have been reported on the N80 on the Stradbally side of Portlaoise.

The Sally Gap is closed due to dangerous road conditions. Roads conditions on routes through the Wicklow Gap are also very poor.

The forecast is for temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees on Monday, but falling overnight to 1 to 4 degrees with some frost in places. There is a possibility of snow on higher ground in parts of Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster.

It is forecast to be cold, very unsettled and changeable through the rest of the week with showers or longer spells of heavy rain, some wintry falls and some frosts.

The weather is a marked turnaround from early last week when near-record temperatures of more than 17 degrees were recorded in some parts of the country.

Many flights to and from Dublin Airport were delayed or cancelled on Sunday evening. Irish Times journalist Paul Cullen, whose Ryanair flight was delayed, tweeted: "Midnight at #dublinairport and about 2,000 #ryanair passengers are queuing for some info, any info."

He posted photographs of passengers sleeping on the floor of the terminals in the airport.
