Garda whose foot was injured while arresting a man awarded €23,700 compensation

A garda whose left foot was injured while arresting a man in Dublin, has been awarded just under €24,000 compensation in the High Court.

Barrister Francis McGagh told Ms Justice Siobhan Stack Garda Tao (Jimmy) Yu had suffered a significant injury to his left ankle after having gone to the assistance of a colleague trying to settle a row between two men and a public house security man on College Street, Dublin 2.

The court heard Garda Yu, of Yew Tree Square, Clane, Co Kildare, had been part of a prisoner escort to Pearse Street Garda Station in May 2015 when a colleague had gone to the aid of a security man outside Doyle's Pub on College Street.

Mr McGagh, who appeared with Keira O'Reilly of Keans Solicitors, said Garda Yu was assisting his colleague in controlling the situation when he went over on his left ankle. While completing his work shift on the day he had asked for desk duties on the following day because his ankle had swollen and was painful.

Yu, aged 29, told Judge Stack he still suffered pain in his ankle and had been confined to desk duties since. He had become anxious and frustrated with the restriction on his work because of his love for on the beat duties.

He had been off work for three weeks following the incident and had to wear an ankle boot and use crutches when he was unable to weight bear on his foot.

Judge Stack awarded Yu €20,000 for pain and suffering and €3,700 for expenses and general outlay on treatment.
