Weather warnings: Met Éireann issues wind and rain for entire country

A status yellow wind and rain warning for counties Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo issued by Met Éireann is to be replaced by a yellow warning for the whole of the island later on Tuesday.

The first yellow warning is for strong to near gale force winds on Tuesday morning and afternoon. These winds will be accompanied by heavy rain clearing to showers through the afternoon, with hazardous driving conditions and localised flooding possible.

It was issued at 4am on Tuesday and is valid until 3pm.

The second yellow warning is for similar conditions including heavy rainfall and strong winds across the whole island on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Conditions are likely to include strong to near gale force and gusty southerly winds, leading to hazardous driving conditions and localised flooding.

This warning is valid from 10pm on Tuesday to 3pm on Wednesday.

Status yellow warnings are for “not unusual weather” but weather that brings with it some localised danger.

Met Éireann has also issued a status yellow marine warning for all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea, valid from 9pm Tuesday night to 6pm on Wednesday.

Southerly winds are expected to reach gale force 8 or strong gale force 9 on all Irish coastal waters on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, becoming confined to coastal waters from Fair Head to Howth Head to Hook Head and the Irish Sea by Wednesday afternoon.

Met Éireann said conditions would be windy today, Tuesday, with strong to gale force southeasterly winds. Outbreaks of rain are expected to track up from the southwest through the morning with some heavy falls leading to localised flooding. The rain should clear with a chance of thunderstorms and hail. Highest temperatures of seven to 10 degrees with winds moderating for a time later this evening.

Tuesday night is expected to be drier for a time early in the night. However, it is expected to become windy again overnight in strengthening southeasterly winds. Very heavy rain, turning wintry in parts, will move in across the country, last to arrive to the east. Cold with lowest temperatures of zero to three degrees.
