Further weather warnings for snow, ice and wind

Met Éireann have issued a status yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the entire country for Wednesday and Thursday.

The national forecaster said “widespread heavy and thundery showers during Wednesday and Thursday will produce hail, sleet and snow at times.”

The weather will in parts lead to “accumulations of ice on untreated surfaces”. The status yellow warning was issued on Tuesday evening, and is in place provisionally until late Thursday evening.

A status yellow wind warning is also in place for Cos Galway, Mayo, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick due to heavy winds predicted for Wednesday through to Thursday. The forecaster warned the western counties may see heavy winds travelling between 50 to 65km/h, with gusts of up to 110km/h.

Wednesday night will see temperatures of between zero and four degrees Celsius, with frost likely to developed in sheltered spots and over high ground.

The forecast for Thursday will see temperatures of between four to eight degrees Celsius, with heavy rain showers and a risk of thunder. There will be a risk of strong and gale force winds along the west and southwest coasts, according to Met Éireann.

The worst of the weather is set to pass by Friday, which the forecaster predicts will be brighter with spells of sunshine, and temperatures of between 5 and 9 degrees Celsius. There may be some pockets of showers along coastal edges of Connacht and Ulster.

On Saturday there may be a few wintry showers in the northwest regions of the country, but generally temperatures will range from five to 10 degrees Celsius. On Saturday evening and through Sunday the forecaster outlines there may be frequent light rain.

Early forecasts for Monday and Tuesday next week show mild but cloudy conditions.
