A passenger flight en route from London to Boston turned back and was diverted to Dublin on Sunday night after it was discovered a piece of luggage was on board without its owner.
The Norwegian flight took off from London Gatwick airport at 4.10pm but turned around about 45 minutes later over the Atlantic coast west of Ireland and landed in Dublin at 6.52pm.
The long-haul Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner can seat up to 344 passengers, but it is not clear if the flight was full.
A spokeswoman for Norwegian said the aircraft had been diverted to Dublin “to offload a piece of luggage”.
“The passenger whom the luggage belonged to was not on board the aircraft, which is why this security measure was taken. We’re sorry about the inconvenience caused to the passengers.”
The aircraft was expected to take off for Boston again shortly before 8.30pm.
