An empty car rolled off large stone steps leading down to the beach at Kilkee, Co Clare on Tuesday afternoon.

Nobody was hurt in the incident despite the number of people attending the beach in the fine weather.

The Coastguard initially dispatched its helicopter following a call from a member of the public but it was stood down when it became clear the vehicle had not entered the water and nobody was injured.

It is understood an issue with the handbrake may have caused the car to roll forward and a couple of passengers had jumped out.

The vehicle was removed just before 6pm with the aid of a tractor.
