Cyclist (40s) dies in Dublin after crashing e-bike into pole

Man taken to hospital after incident in Ranelagh but later died from his injuries

A man has died after his motorised bicycle hit a pole in Dublin on Monday night.

The incident occurred at Sallymount Avenue in Ranelagh at about 8.30pm on Monday.

The cyclist, a man in his 40s, was taken to St Vincent’s University Hospital in a critical condition after his motorised pedal cycle struck a pole, according to gardaí.

The man later died as a result of his injuries.

The road was closed temporarily to allow Forensic Collision Investigators to technically examine the scene, but it has since re-opened fully.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Any road users who were travelling on the roads from the Baggot Street area to the Sandymount Avenue area between 7.45pm and 8.30pm and who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

Concerns have been raised in recent years about the safety of e-bikes and e-scooters, with Government approving just last week legislation regulating their use.
