‘A young life taken away’: Victim of Carrigaline stabbing named as Shane Murphy (27)

Gardaí investigating the fatal stabbing of a 27-year-old man in his home in Carrigaline, Co Cork have suspended questioning of an arrested man to allow him receive medical treatment.

Detectives investigating the fatal stabbing of Shane Murphy at his home at Sea View Avenue arrested a 42-year-old man in Passage West in Cork shortly after 8am this morning.

The man was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act for questioning about the fatal assault on Mr Murphy as well as an assault which caused serious injuries to Mr Murphy’s father, Weeshie (75).

The older man suffered a wound to the neck. He presented at Cork University Hospital (CUH) sometime around 4am and remains in a serious condition.

The late Shane Murphy was one of the top pitch and putt players in the country. He played at Raffeen Pitch and Putt Club, and was well known in Carrigaline where he played football with the local soccer club.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident and members of the Armed Support Unit entered the Sea View Avenue residence where they found Shane Murphy in an upstairs bedroom of the house. He had suffered a stab wound to the upper body.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but a local doctor pronounced him dead at the scene.

The area was cordoned off and Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster examined the remains at the scene before they were removed to CUH, where she carried out a postmortem this afternoon.

Gardaí say they have not disclosed the results of Dr Bolster’s findings at postmortem for operational reasons.

It is understood gardaí recovered a knife at the scene which is due to be examined by garda technical experts.

Meanwhile, the man arrested in Passage West was brought to Gurranebraher Garda Station for questioning.

There he was examined by a doctor who advised he be taken to CUH for treatment, and questioning was suspended.

Detectives are hoping to take a full statement from Weeshie Murphy in the coming days.

News of the attack has shocked the local community, with Fianna Fail Councillor Séamus McGrath saying the thoughts of everyone were with the Murphy family.

“Weeshie Murphy is a self-employed builder and well known in Carrigaline and everyone woke up this morning to the really tragic news that he had been injured and his son Shane had been killed.

“They’ve been living in the area for many years so there’s an overwhelming feeling of sadness at the incident and extending our thoughts to the family and wishing Weeshie our best for a full recovery.”

Gardaí have begun door-to-door inquiries in the quiet estate off Church Road on the east side of Carrigaline, trying to establish if any disturbance was heard in the early hours of the morning.

Sinn Féin TD for Cork South Central Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said this morning: “Devastating news coming out of Carrigaline this morning. Completely shocking, impossible to comprehend. Such a young life taken away.

“My thoughts with the family and friends and the wider community in Carrigaline, Passage and the surrounding areas. There are no words,” Mr Ó Laoghaire tweeted.
