Gardaí investigating after man dies at house in north Co Cork

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in a house in north Co Cork on Thursday night.

The man, aged in his early 60s, was pronounced dead by a local GP after the emergency services were called to O'Brien Terrace in Buttevant at around 9.30pm.

The alarm was raised by the man’s partner and paramedics found him unconscious in a downstairs room. The man failed to regain consciousness despite efforts to resuscitate him.

It is understood that the man had some injuries and while there was no sign of forced entry to the house, gardaí requested the services of a pathologist.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster carried out an postmortem at Cork University Hospital on Friday and samples have been sent for toxicology tests.

Gardaí said the investigation was precautionary at this stage and would be determined by the full postmortem findings.

A technical examination was carried out at the house where the body was found and officers made door to door inquiries in the O’Brien Terrace area.

CCTV footage from around Buttevant has also been harvested in an attempt to establish when the man was last seen alive.
