Part of Cork University Hospital ceiling collapses

Inspection carried out after incident in ophthalmic unit in which no one was injured

An inspection is being carried out at Cork University Hospital (CUH) after part of a ceiling collapsed in an outpatients department on Thursday morning.

A number of patients had to be evacuated shortly after 8.30am when part of the ceiling in the ophthalmic unit collapsed.

Members of the Cork City Fire Brigade attended the scene. Fortunately nobody was injured in the incident.

The Health Service Executive has outlined that a number of ceiling tiles were water damaged and gave way in the reception area of the department.

“There has been no disruption to casualty ophthalmology patients as a result. This service is continuing as normal. A number of patients attending for ophthalmology outpatients have been cancelled for today. The local maintenance department responded immediately and are working to replace the damaged ceiling tiles today. The fire services have provided industrial fans to assist in drying out the unit.”
