q TURKEY GERMS: Contrary to most people's beliefs, the Christmas turkey should not be washed before it is put in the oven.
The practice of washing or rinsing poultry (that includes chickens, ducks, geese or whatever other bird you care to eat) under the tap is likely to lead to increased risk of spreading germs, according to safefood, the Food Safety Promotion Board.
Recent research has shown that bacteria, particularly campylobacter, can be spread significant distances in the kitchen.
All harmful bacteria will be killed by cooking the bird thoroughly, ie until the juices run clear and there is no pink meat left.
q CHRISTMAS SUPPORT: The Marino Therapy Centre is running an eating distress Christmas helpline this year for anyone suffering from an eating disorder.
The helpline is usually open from 6pm-8pm on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and these times will continue over Christmas.
Tel: 01 8333063 to talk to someone who can offer advice on how to cope with social occasions, times alone and all that comes in between.
q MIGRAINE TREATMENT: The valuable role of complementary therapies in the management of migraine is highlighted in the current Migraine Association of Ireland (MAI) newsletter. The approaches described as helpful include yoga therapy, the Alexander Technique and Tui-na, a Chinese bodywork therapy.
For more details, contact the MAI on tel: 01 8064121. A migraine specialist nurse is also available on tel: 01 7979848, Monday to Thursday 2pm-4.30pm.
